Frequently Asked Questions

Information for utility members regarding CBYD services, notifications, and system use.

General Service Information

What is Call Before You Dig?

Call Before You Dig (CBYD) is a nonprofit clearinghouse that serves as the communication link between excavators and participating utility members. CBYD notifies utility owners of planned excavation activity so underground facilities can be identified and protected.

Who is required to notify Call Before You Dig?

Anyone using power or mechanized equipment to disturb the earth on or below the surface is required to submit a location request through CBYD.

How long is a location request valid?

Location requests are valid for 30 days from the date notice is provided, not the excavation start date.

What holidays does the CBYD call center observe?

The CBYD call center is closed on major holidays. Emergency requests are still accepted by phone when the call center is closed.

E-Ticket Process

What is a routine E-Ticket?

A routine E-Ticket is submitted for planned excavation work and requires at least two full working days’ notice before excavation begins.

What is an emergency E-Ticket?

An emergency E-Ticket is submitted when excavation is required due to an immediate threat to life, health, property, or essential utility service.

How are utility members notified?

Once a ticket is submitted, CBYD transmits the excavation details to all affected utility members listed on the ticket.

What is expected of utilities after notification?

Utility members are responsible for responding to the ticket and determining whether their facilities are in conflict with the proposed excavation area.

E-Ticket History

Can utilities view ticket history?

Yes. Ticket history and details can be accessed through the account History section.

Can previously submitted tickets be renewed?

Tickets may be renewed if they are less than 30 days old.
